Our Story

The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) began in 1994 as a nonprofit organization, funded by a major telecom provider with a mission to connect Indiana schools to museums, zoos and other state cultural organizations using videoconferencing. The original website was built to easily identify content for education, manage registration of programs, and to evaluate quality of content.
In the early 2000’s, CILC expanded its reach into other states, and then internationally.  Membership has continued to grow, and today, CILC communicates with 45,000 members each week. The number of active Content Providers has also grown, whereby CILC has served over 200 cultural organizations around the world, making available over 1,800 unique video distance learning programs to educators. Interactive programs originate from across the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.
Re-established in 2015 as a 501(c)(3) Minnesota nonprofit organization, CILC serves as a program to the South Central Service Cooperative, an Education Service Agency with its headquarters in southern Minnesota.
Through support provided by Content Providers and sponsors, CILC continues to provide many services free to its member education organizations and lifelong-learning programs. And CILC now collaborates with other interactive learning Partners, helping members to connect to professional development that includes national certification for online and blended teachers, and global educator training, to unique classroom connections with STEM business and industry, to proprietary, mobile adaptive learning solutions, and to premier international student academic competitions.
As CILC continues to evolve, so do the technologies used to provide interactive connectivity, creating unprecedented opportunities for access by members and Content Providers. In the 90’s, massive codecs and telephone lines provided connection, and only educators in schools and organizations that had a dedicated ITV classroom could participate. Ten years later, technology advanced to IP-based video systems and more compact codecs. But today, there is an increased use in cloud-based video, using tools that are common in most all classrooms—a browser and access to the Internet, and a display.
It is an exciting time as the former barriers of cost, connectivity and ease-of-use have all but disappeared!
CILC invites you to come grow with us as we look forward to the next chapter of our story.
